More Evdence High Intensity Interval Exercise (HIIT) Works

Still trying to lose weight the old-fashioned way with hours of strenuous exercises in the gym doing exercises that leave you exhausted but.no thinner? Do you cringe every time you watch the contestants on The Biggest Loser go through their Last Chance Workouts with Bob Harper yelling in their ears?
ME TOO!
I'm here to tell you that you don't have to subject yourself to all that misery. And it doesn't work anyways!
The secret is out!
High Intensity Interval Training WORKS!
A recent study by researchers at Ohio State University has confirmed that alternating fast and slow periods of exercise may increase your weight loss. For example, walking or running for a minute fast  followed by several minutes of slow walking can improve your chances of losing wcight.
The researchers believe this type of alternating fast and slow periods increase the matabolic burn,
The great thing about it is that you can perform any type of exercise in this manner to achieve these results. These include using the treadmill or bicycle.
So, just remember to hurry up but also slow down!

How to lose weight walking

I have written several times about the many health benefits of High Intensity Interval Training or HIIT. http://notjustforboomers.blogspot.com/2013/04/high-intensity-interval-training.html For the most  part those have dealt with the use of a stationary bicycle and how you can increase your oxygen efficiency and decrease  your blood sugar and blood pressure by alternating periods of intense cycling with periods of rest or at a much slower pace.  What we have decided to do is to see if those same principles apply to interval walking. In addition several studies have shown that following a program of interval walking can result in significant weight loss over time.

We started a program today at our local high school track. We began walking at a fast pace for 440 yards followed by another 440 yards at a relaxed pace.  Most tracks are probably set up with lines on the track so it is fairly easy to measure the distance. The fast pace is about twice the usual walking speed.  We started with a mile and will build up to several miles in the next few weeks.
I have seen recommendations that this program be alternated with days of walking at a normal pace for 30 minutes. Some articles suggest that following this program can result in a weight loss of about a pound a week. We'll let you know if we find any success in this approach. How to lose weight while sleeping,

Have you ever noticed that if you weigh yourself at night and again in the morning, you will inevitably weigh less in the morning? I am not sure what causes that phenomenon but a number of recent scientific studies have clearly shown that there is a direct correlation between the amount of sleep you get each night and your ability to lose weight.  But it is not what you think. The studies have shown that the more that you sleep while trying to lose weight, the more weight you can lose.

I know this sounds almost too good to be true, but an article in the Ann Intern Med, dated November 2, 2010, summarizes the results of.a study of some 10 men and women who were trying to lose weight. The results were quite surprising. Those who slept 5.5 hours a night over a 14 day period lost 55% less weight than those who slept 8.5 hours The authors of the study concluded that the amount of sleep plays a role in the maintenance of fat free body mass. Lack of sufficient sleep may cause the diets not to work as efficiently as they otherwise would.

So, don't worry if you are sleeping more while dieting.  It is a good thing, not a bad one!
